About Shiatsu
Shiatsu is a Japanese bodywork tradition that translates literally as 'finger pressure'. Like acupuncture, it works with the meridian system of traditional Chinese medicine — channels along which qi (vital energy) flows through the body — but uses sustained thumb, finger, palm, elbow, and knee pressure rather than needles to regulate the flow. Sessions are performed on a floor mat with the client clothed in loose, comfortable garments. The practitioner works systematically along each meridian, holding pressure points for several seconds each, and may incorporate gentle joint mobilisation and stretching. The pace is slower and more meditative than Western massage, with the therapist's own body weight supplying most of the pressure rather than muscular effort.
Practitioners assess the quality and strength of qi in each meridian through palpation — an area of excess may feel full, tense, or warm; a deficiency may feel empty, cold, or hollow — and tailor the session to balance what they find. From a Western physiological perspective, Shiatsu stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, increases peripheral circulation, and releases endorphins through sustained mechanical pressure on sensory receptors. Clients report benefits ranging from improved energy and mood to relief from chronic headaches, digestive discomfort, and lower back pain. It is particularly valued by people who prefer a fully clothed format, find oil-based massage over-stimulating, or are drawn to working within a traditional East Asian medical framework.
