About Craniosacral Therapy
Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a light-touch manual technique that works with the craniosacral system — the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. The practitioner applies no more than 5 grams of pressure (roughly the weight of a coin) at specific points along the skull, spine, and sacrum, using an extremely refined sense of touch to assess the rhythm of cerebrospinal fluid as it pulses through this system. Restrictions in the craniosacral rhythm — caused by trauma, inflammation, stress, or structural dysfunction — are released by facilitating the tissue toward greater ease and symmetry. Sessions are performed clothed, on a massage table, in a quiet environment conducive to deep nervous system settling.
CST is sought by people managing conditions where the nervous system is centrally implicated: post-concussion syndrome, chronic headache and migraine, TMJ dysfunction, tinnitus, fibromyalgia, PTSD, and complex trauma responses. It is also used in neonatal care for infants following difficult births, and by some practitioners as part of palliative care. The subtlety of the work means that experiences during sessions vary widely — some clients feel little, while others report sensations of warmth, emotional release, or profound physical ease. Skeptics point to the limited body of high-quality randomised controlled evidence; proponents cite consistent clinical outcomes and a theoretical framework increasingly supported by developments in interoceptive neuroscience and fascia research.
