About Reiki

Reiki is a Japanese energy healing practice developed in the early twentieth century by Mikao Usui, based on the concept that a practitioner can channel universal life energy — rei (universal) and ki (life energy) — through their hands to support the recipient's own healing processes. Sessions are performed with the client fully clothed, lying on a massage table. The practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above specific positions on the head, torso, and limbs — positions that roughly correspond to the body's major energy centres (chakras) and organ systems. Each position is held for several minutes; the practitioner acts as a conduit rather than actively directing energy, allowing it to flow where it is needed.

From a biomedical standpoint, the mechanisms of Reiki are not established; clinical trials have produced mixed results, and the concept of channelled universal energy does not map to known physiology. What is consistently reported, however, is a profound relaxation response, reduced anxiety, and a sense of physical warmth and ease during and after sessions. Reiki is used extensively in palliative care, oncology support programmes, and hospital settings as a complementary support — not as a treatment for disease, but as a means of reducing suffering, managing anxiety, and supporting quality of life. It is non-invasive, carries no known risks, and is accessible to people who are too medically fragile for conventional bodywork. Clients seeking Reiki generally do so from a place of openness to working outside a strictly mechanistic framework.
