About Lymphatic Drainage
Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) uses an exceptionally light, rhythmic technique — pressure well below that of any other massage modality — to stimulate the superficial lymphatic capillaries and facilitate the movement of lymph fluid through the lymphatic vessels toward the lymph nodes. The strokes follow the anatomical direction of lymph flow and are applied in specific sequences depending on which lymphatic territories are being addressed. Unlike the cardiovascular system, the lymphatic system has no pump; it relies on skeletal muscle movement, breathing, and the gentle mechanical stimulus of MLD to move fluid. Sessions typically run 60 to 90 minutes and produce a deep parasympathetic response — many clients fall asleep.
The primary clinical application of MLD is in the management of lymphoedema — chronic swelling caused by compromised lymphatic drainage, most commonly following cancer treatment that involves lymph node removal or radiation. In this context it is a medical intervention typically performed as part of a complete decongestive therapy programme. Beyond lymphoedema, MLD is used post-surgically to reduce swelling and bruising and accelerate tissue healing, and by some practitioners in the management of conditions including sinusitis, fibromyalgia, and autoimmune conditions associated with tissue inflammation. It is also used preventively as a detoxification and immune support modality. Contraindications include active infection, acute deep vein thrombosis, active malignancy, and cardiac oedema.
