About Ashiatsu
Ashiatsu — from the Japanese ashi (foot) and atsu (pressure) — is a massage modality in which the therapist delivers strokes and compression using their feet while supporting their own body weight on overhead bars or ropes suspended from the ceiling. This setup allows the practitioner to modulate pressure precisely, from light to extremely deep, by adjusting the proportion of body weight applied through the foot. The broad, flat surface of the foot delivers pressure in a fundamentally different way than hands or elbows: it compresses a larger area simultaneously, spreading force more evenly and reducing the pointed intensity that some clients find uncomfortable with elbow or thumb techniques. Long gliding strokes with the full sole of the foot along the erector spinae are characteristic of the work.
Ashiatsu is capable of reaching depths unavailable through conventional hand-based deep tissue work — it is not uncommon for a practitioner to apply two to three times their body weight's worth of pressure through controlled technique — making it highly effective for clients with significant chronic muscular tension, dense musculature, or long-standing postural restrictions. Despite the depth, most clients describe it as feeling broad and comfortable rather than painful. It is particularly well-regarded for lumbar and thoracic paraspinal work, hip flexor release, and IT band work. Contraindications include osteoporosis, spinal fusions, certain cardiovascular conditions, and pregnancy. Clients are advised to confirm their practitioner is certified specifically in ashiatsu technique, as the method requires substantial training beyond standard massage.
