About Acupressure

Acupressure applies the theoretical foundations of acupuncture — the meridian system and the specific anatomical points (acupoints) that regulate the flow of qi — without the use of needles. Pressure is applied by the therapist's thumbs, fingers, knuckles, or elbows directly to specific acupoints along the meridians, holding each point for 30 seconds to several minutes until a release or change in the tissue quality is perceived. The technique can be applied as a standalone session or integrated into a broader massage treatment. Practitioners trained in traditional Chinese medicine theory will work based on a differential diagnosis of the client's pattern — excess versus deficiency, heat versus cold — selecting points accordingly.

Acupressure has a substantial body of clinical research behind specific applications: P6 (Neiguan), located three finger-widths below the wrist crease, has been repeatedly validated in high-quality trials for the reduction of chemotherapy-induced nausea and post-operative nausea. Points along the large intestine and stomach meridians have evidence for headache relief. Acupressure is widely used for menstrual pain, anxiety, insomnia, digestive complaints, and musculoskeletal pain, particularly in populations who prefer to avoid needles. Self-acupressure is also taught as a between-session tool, giving clients an active role in managing recurring symptoms. Like all TCM-based practices, it sits comfortably alongside conventional medical care and is increasingly integrated into hospital and clinical settings.
