About Myofascial Release
Fascia is the continuous web of connective tissue that surrounds and permeates every muscle, bone, nerve, and organ in the body. When healthy, it is pliable and hydrated; after trauma, surgery, inflammation, or years of repetitive posture, it can thicken, dehydrate, and adhere to adjacent structures, creating restrictions that limit movement and generate pain far from the original site of injury. Myofascial release addresses these restrictions by applying gentle, sustained pressure in the direction of the restriction — not forcing the tissue, but waiting for it to soften and elongate. The therapist holds each position for a minimum of 90 to 120 seconds, the time required for a true viscoelastic response in the fascia.
Because fascia is a bodywide system, myofascial restrictions rarely exist in isolation. A restriction in the hip flexor can create compensatory pulling through the lumbar fascia and into the thoracic spine, producing upper back pain with no obvious proximate cause. Skilled practitioners assess the whole body rather than chasing symptoms to the most painful location. The technique is performed without oil or lotion — friction is necessary to engage the fascial layer rather than slide over it. Clients with post-surgical scarring, fibromyalgia, chronic pelvic pain, or movement restrictions that massage and physical therapy have not resolved often find myofascial release produces results where other approaches have plateaued.
