How to Verify a Florida Massage License (and Why It Matters)

Check any Florida massage therapist's license in two minutes using the state DOH lookup. Here's the exact steps and what each status means.

How to Verify a Florida Massage License (and Why It Matters)

Booking a massage means letting a stranger work on your body in a private setting. In Florida, the single best way to protect yourself is also the simplest: confirm the therapist actually holds a valid license before your first appointment. It takes about two minutes, it is free, and it tells you more about who you are hiring than any review ever could.

Here is how to do it, what the results mean, and why we built our entire directory around this one check.

Why a license is non-negotiable in Florida

Massage therapy in Florida is regulated by the Department of Health under the Board of Massage Therapy. To practice legally, a therapist must complete an approved training program of at least 500 hours, pass a national licensing exam, and maintain continuing education. Their license carries an "MA" number.

An unlicensed person advertising massage is, at best, untrained and uninsured. At worst, unlicensed massage advertising is one of the most common covers for illicit activity, which is exactly why the state takes verification seriously. A valid MA license is your assurance that the person is trained, accountable to a regulatory board, and operating within the law.

The two-minute license check

1. Go to the Florida Department of Health license verification portal (search "Florida DOH MQA license search").

2. Choose the Massage Therapist (MA) profession from the dropdown.

3. Enter the therapist's name, or their license number if you have it.

4. Open the matching record.

You are looking for four things:

  • License status: Clear/Active. This is the green light.
  • The name matches the person you are booking.
  • The expiration date is in the future.
  • No disciplinary actions listed on the record.

What each license status means

  • Clear/Active — Valid and in good standing. Safe to book.
  • Null and Void — Never completed or lapsed past renewal. Do not book.
  • Delinquent — Lapsed but potentially renewable. Not currently authorized to practice.
  • Suspended/Revoked — Disciplinary action taken. Avoid.

If you cannot find any record at all under the person's name, treat that as a red flag, not a clerical error. Every legitimate Florida therapist is in this database.

How we handle this for you

Every therapist listed on Florida Massage Elite has had their MA license checked against the state database before their profile goes live. We verify the license number, confirm the status is active, and re-check on a schedule. That is the entire reason the directory exists: so you do not have to wonder whether the person you found is the real thing.

You are still welcome to run the check yourself, and we encourage it. But when you browse a verified profile here, the two-minute check has already been done.

A quick word on what verification does not cover

A license confirms training and legal standing. It does not rate skill, bedside manner, or whether a particular modality suits you. For that, read the therapist's profile, look at their listed specializations, and contact them directly with your questions before booking. License first, fit second.
